We are all influenced by
color in design. Does it
seem to you some artists
have natural instincts
for what colors are
going to be most
popular with collectors
and consumers? It could
be an innate gift as
many artists are more
highly sensitized to
their environment than
the average person.
Whether you have the
gift or not, there is help
for you to find clues to
work current color
trends into your palette.
For example, you can
look around at what is
selling at home decor
retailers like Crate &
Barrel and Bombay
Company, or through
their catalogs if they are
not convenient for you.
Why with top designers
Michael Graves and
Isaac Mizrahi creating
for Target, you can even
find color trend ideas
there.
Some readers
understandably may be
turning their nose at
these suggestions as
being too commercial
and cheeky, but the
influence is still there.
There are many other
sources for color

content and you’ll find
them noted here in
future issues.

Although it seems
orange and lime and
robin egg blue are all
the rage, not to worry, if
you look around, you’ll
find other “hot” choices
for your palette.
If you haven’t been
living in a cave, you
probably have seen or
heard of HGTV. The
cable channel
broadcasts nonstop
home decor, design and
renovation shows. A
few years ago, a couple
came to stay with my
wife and me for a visit.
The two women had
been fast friends since
meeting at a mutual
friend’s wedding. They
lived in different states,
so didn’t have much
chance to socialize with
each other.
When we sat down in
the evening and turned
on the television,
HGTV was on from my
wife’s previous
viewing. These two
friends broke into an
animated conversation
about various shows
and hosts they both
liked. It was amazing to
witness this as neither
had talked about their
viewing habits before this
visit. I was surprised at
how much they had in
common with each other
and HGTV. Our male
visitor looked at me and
said, “Don’t you get it?
It’s sports for women.”
What a perfect analogy.
One can imagine two
guys could tune-in ESPN
and launch into a dialog
about sports. Many guys
could live with just sports
and news programming
on the clicker and never
know there were other
channels.
You don’t have to watch
HGTV to get the updates,
you can sign up for their
free newsletter at:
v/newsletter/. It publishes
a tremendous amount of
interesting and
informative news on
color and home
decorating trends. You
can browse through their
archives and get up-to-
date on past issues.
Watching the shows can
be very inspiring to see
how designers are mixing
colors in exciting new
ways for the home.
In coming issues, we’ll
offer ideas on trends in
color and other aspects
affecting the market.
Keep tuned to your
favorite “sports” channel.

Newest Home Decor*
Update April 1, 2005
One of the newest
decorating trends is the
use of bird prints in
fabrics for every room of
the house, especially in
bright colors like parrot
green, robin's egg blue
and canary yellow. Look
for birds to become one
of the popular "themes"
in decorating this spring
and summer, showing up
on everything from
drapery fabrics, wall art
and sculpture to
dinnerware and linens.
Birds being used are not
only your backyard robin
and bluebird, but also
more exotic birds such
as macaws, cranes,
cockatoos, peacocks and
flamingoes.
